The Congregation of the Missionaries of Mariannhill (CMM), Missionary Sisters of Precious Blood (CPS) and the faithful of the Diocese of Mariannhill held their annual thanksgiving celebration in honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus recently.

The Regional Superior of Mariannhill, Fr. Bheki Shabalala CMM, said the celebration is aimed at remembering the historic moment of the Congregation when the Mariannhill forefathers and mothers in 1911, led by Abbot Gerald, dedicated Mariannhill and all its missions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Fr. Shabalala said soon after the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, the Abbot of Mariannhill at the time made a solemn public promise or vow that if Mariannhill remained safe throughout the war, the month of June was going to be celebrated each year with special solemnity.

Fr. Shabalala said the Abbot promised that a votive chapel was going to be built in honour of the Sacred Herat of Jesus.

“Indeed the promise was fulfilled when this wonderful chapel was built in 1919 by Br. Nivard, our greatest architect,” he said.

“Today we stand here full of gratitude that we have done our part to faithfully observe our promise or vow to say ‘Thank you Lord!,” said Fr. Shabalala.

He said through the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Church presents this mystery for our contemplation: the mystery of the heart of a God who feels compassion and who bestows all his love upon humanity.
